DEPARTMENT OF STATE
OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY
WASHINGTON
June 17, 1948
SUMMARY OF TELEGRAMS
YUGOSLAVIA
Despite statements just two days earlier which indi-
cated that he personally expected the Danube Conference
to be held in Belgrade, the Yugoslav Foreign Minister yesterday
informed the US and UK representatives that (1) he was responsible
for informing the Soviets that Belgrade would be unable to accomodate
the conference, (2) the Yugoslav Government did not agree with this
view, and (3) accordingly all necessary measures were being taken to
hold the conference in Belgrade on July 30.
PALESTINE
The French Government has confirmed that a limited
number of Jews of military age, together with medical
and military supplies, sailed from southern France for Palestine dur-
ing the night of June 11-12. Our Consul General in Marseille reports
that all the passengers on the two ships involved reportedly lodged
with a known Soviet agent while in Marseille.
PORTUGAL
Ambassador MacVeagh reports that in his first inter-
view with Prime Minister Salazar he found the latter
less well informed on conditions in the US than he expected and appar-
ently "most anxious" to be reassured concerning the continuation of a
strong US attitude toward the USSR.
