Truman miracle astounded entire press. TIMES epitomized
feeling, saying he "confounded all the prophets and
surprised the world." EXPRESS bannered "Alone Truman
Does It. In slap at pollsters, GUARDIAN headlined
Truman confounds law of man and Roper" and said The
history of this fight will become an American fable. "
Truman's domestic policies, his attacks on the 80th
Congress and his campaigning were generally advanced as
accounting for swing of sentiment to him. TIMES
correspondent reported: "one thing is certain; he has
won by being an outspoken supporter of the New Deal and
of the rights of labor. The new administration is likely
to be a liberal-labor coalition to the left of the previous
administration in this country. Truman thought the people
wanted this, and he has proved right. They preferred it to
promises of efficiency.'
GUARDIAN reported his achievement was "audaciously
Rooseveltian" and editorially remarked "it shows that the
roots of the Democratic Party-as Roosevelt remade 1t--
go deeper into the soil of the United States than any
political observers had understood." HERALD which
bannered union's vote "smashed labor baiters said his

victory is "grim news for all reactionaries" . TELEGRAPH
reported it " is a thumping mandate for his own policies"
which Congress "refused to endorse." NEWS CHRONICLE said
his success "shows that a majority of the American
electoraté will look
