DEPARTMENT OF STATE
OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY
WASHINGTON
June 2, 1949
T
SUMMARY OF TELEGRAMS
ITALIAN COLONIES
The British Ambassador in Rome has informed our
Ambassador that Italian Foreign Minister Sforza
regards the British statement on self-government for Cyrenaica as a
breach of faith on the part of Bevin and that he had to do his utmost
to persuade Sforza not to resign. The British Ambassador feels that
Sforza's resignation at this time would be most unfortunate in con-
nection with the forthcoming debate on the Atlantic Pact in the Italian
Parliament.
GREECE
The Greek Ambassador has informed us that the
Under Secretary of the Greek Foreign Office has
conveyed to Australian Foreign Minister Evatt his view that Evatt's
latest intervention in the Greek question was a most unfriendly action
and that Evatt could have done no greater harm to Greece. He said
that no Greek leader could agree to any discussion of internal Greek
matters and that the view of the Greek government is that Greek national
dignity and self-preservation is involved. We informed the Greek
Ambassador that, although the Greek position is understandable, we
doubt whether this statement of it will forestall further intervention
by Evatt.
