ISRAEL
Ambassador McDonald in Tel Aviv reports that a
non-aggression pact has been initialled by
Israel and Jordan. According to the Israeli Foreign Office, the
pact, which is to be signed in legal form in a few days, provides
an "additional layer" in the peace-making process, specifically
mentions the partition of Jerusalem and an outlet to the sea, and
grants access to and freedom of the Holy Places. McDonald states
that the Foreign Office hopes the agreement will establish a pattern
for the other Arab states, and is obviously pleased with the progress
to date.
