SUMMARY OF TELEGRAMS
INDIA
Prime Minister Nehru has informed Ambassador Henderson
in New Delhi of the seriousness with which India re-
gards the present situation in Bengal, stating that thousands of
Hindus, despite the hardships and dangers involved, are travelling
from East Bengal (belonging to Pakistan) to West Bengal (belonging
to India) daily. Nehru told Henderson that outrages against Hindus
have been taking place almost simultaneously in widely scattered
parts of East Bengal, evidently indicating that these attacks were
planned. Nehru also said that pressure is being exerted on him to
relieve the persecuted minorities of East Bengal. Finally, Nehru
stated that while there is nothing the US can do to assist at
this juncture, he wants us to "understand the situation".
BELGIUM
Ambassador Murphy in Brussels has been informed that
the Cabinet of Prime Minister Eyskens is badly split
over the issue of the return or the abdication of King Leopold.
According to Murphy's informant, Eyskens has flown to Geneva to
persuade the King to abdicate, and will threaten to resign if his
advice is not followed. Murphy's informant believes that even if
Leopold should return, he would find it impossible to form a
government.
