Dear Mr. Ickes:
Thought you would like to know about
progress of the committee. The membership has
increased as you will note on the stationery,
and I consider it sufficient for the present.
Initial steps have already been taken
in the five states yet to consider the amendment
this year--which, according to my best information,
are Texas, Nassachusetts, South Carolina, Florida,
and Alabama.
The Texas legislature is still in session,
I know, and I have sent material to William George
Richards, a legislator (and son of Mr. Richards who
is a member of this committee. Also, last night, I
had a telegram from one Finley J. Henderson of
Austin, Tex., (who is unknown to me) asking for
a list of our thembership, indicating an interest there.
The Florida and Alabama legislatures do
not adjourn until June 5 and 25 respectively, so
there is time for work there. The Massachusetts
and South Carolina Legislatures, however, do not
have legal adjournment dates, and I am awaiting
replies as to the situation in those states.
Our literature consists of copies of
your column and of my 1940 booklet on Presidential
tenure.
So far I have been unable to learn what
action 16 states have taken on the amendment this
year. If you hear anything, let me know. If one
of the wire services do not carry a story on the
situation soon, I plan a direct inquiry to those
states.
Only Kentucky and Louisiana are scheduled
to act on the matter in 1950.
You're free, as far as I'm concerned, now,
to make any public announcement of the committee that
you wish. As far as I am concerned, however, I am
always careful never to connect myself with the
newspaper here in such matters.
