Meno. for saying Mr. Charles Ge Spencer of Spencer, Mith and
Prentis,Tine. NYC., N.Y. desires to present to the President one of the original
drawings by Miss Lill Rethi of the construction stage of the renovation of the
Mhite House. Gen. Edgercon suggested that Mr. Spencer malce his onna selection but
Mr. Spencer prefers to give the one that would be most acceptable. Asics Mr. Hopkins
to sacuro a solection from pictures which are reproduced in attached brochure and he
would lile to have broohure re burnod at Mr. Hopicins' con-enienco. Penciled notei

General Edgerton, July 30, 1952, sent memo. to Miss Connay enclesing merio,
identifying drawing by Miss Lili Rethi which Mr. Charles B. Spencer has presented to
the President, and a suggested draft of a ltr the President might like to send
to
Mr.
Spencer.-hePresident, July 30th, wrote "Deer lir. Spencer" saying it was thoughtful
and gracious to send him Miss Lili Rethi's fine drawing of the south facade of the
White House, made during the construction. Said in addition to its high artistic
qualities the picture, framed in old pine from the building, is a unique record of
the appearance of the White House in 1950, not likely to be seen again. Said he is
happy to have this interesting and attractive memento of the renovation work and is
deeply grateful for the gift. Said he would treasure it not only for its own intrin-
sic qualities, but even more for the cordial friendship it betokens.
