Population of U. S. Rises
To Record 142,673,000
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UP) -
The census bureau reported today
that, due to a large post war rise
in the birth rate, the nation's popu-
lation increased by 2,279,000 last
year for the biggest gain in history.
The total population on Jan. 1,
1947, was 142,673,000.
The 1946 increase raised the
population about 11,000,000 above
the April 1, 1940, census.
The Bereau said that a net im-
migration of about 251,000 was a
negligible factor in last year's
"striking" increase, which was due
primarily to "the large rise in the
birth rate following demobilization
(and) the continuation of the
death rate at a low level."
The Bureau noted that the 1946
record greatly exceeded the peak
war time year of 1943, which saw
an increase of 1,722,000.
