Rice
edget Rice pgt.
Dear Sirs:
The President has asked me to reply to your telegram of
30 August 1951 concerning a headstone for the grave of Sergeant
First Class John R. Rice.
#
After consultation with Mrs. Rice's personal representative,
Sergeant Rice was allotted space in a section of Arlington
X 39
National Cemetery where all graves, including that of General
Pershing, are identically marked by the Department of the Army
with upright Government headstones. Therefore, your generous
offer must be regretfully declined.
The President further asks me to express to you his deep
appreciation of the spirit which prompted your action.
Sincerely,
HARRY H. VAUGHAN
Major General, USAR
Military Aide to the President
