My dear Miss Weddington:
V
Your message on behalf of the members of
your Auxilliary has been received. While your in-
terest in wiring is appreciated, I wish to say that
the President, after careful consideration and on
recommendations from the various Departments and
Agencies, vetoed H.R. 5678, the McCarran-Walters
Bill. In his message returning the Immigration
#
and Nationality Act to the House of Representatives
without his approval, the President stated his con-
victions that the bill was & step backward in the
immigration and naturalization policy of our country.
The House of Representatives overrode the Presidential
veto on June twenty-sixth and the Senate on June twenty-
seventh failed to sustain the President's action by
two votes.
With the thought that you might like to
have a copy of the President's veto message for your
ready reference, I an taking the liberty of sending
you a copy herewith.
Very sincerely yours,
Is
MATTHEW J. CONNELLY
Secretary to the President
Miss L. M.yWeddington,
