Dear Mr. Secretary:
I have your letter of June
27th with reference to ceremonies to be held at

Fredericksburg, Virginia on Sunday, July 6, 1947
in observance of the Bicentennial of John Paul
Jones' birth.

I regret that my schedule will not
permit me to be present at Fredericksburg on
this occasion. However, I shall be very glad to
have the gold medal that is to be posthumously

awarded to John Paul Jones presented in the name

of the President of the United States. It is

understood that the presentation is to be made

by Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, President of the

Naval Historical Foundation, and that Rear Admiral
James L. Holloway, Jr., Superintendent of the U.S.

Naval Academy will accept the medal on behalf of
the Academy and place it in the John Paul Jones
crypt at Annapolis.
