I
Dear Mr. President:
In the name of humanity and in the spirit of our Lord Jesus
Christ, let me plead with you not to approve of the manufacturing of the
H- bomb. I am convinced that you want peace and will give your approval
only if and when you are convinced that it is essential to peace that the
United States have the H- bomb. But, Mr. President, the odds are com-
pletely against the forces of peace in our government and in the world
situation at the present time. When the United States government provides
several times as much money for war preparation as is given to the State
Department, UNESCO, the United Nations and a non-imperialistic Point Four
Program, war - not peace - is inevitable.
I urge you and your advisers to consider this fact seriously,
to formulate a program greatly multiplying the forces for peace - the un-
mistakabl positive forces such as I have mentioned above - and announce
that program to the American people. I am sure that if you will appeal
to your fellow citizens, they will certainly respond with their support.
Such a program would be full of creative hope whereas there is nothing
but fear engendered by the horrid thought of anyone having the H- bomb.
May God give you his guidance as you face this tremendous
decision.
