2101 South Lynn St. Arlington, Va. October 17, 1946 Dear Selig, I had meant to write you last week and tell you how much I enjoyed your pleasantry with Otto. The whole thing worked out perfectly; it was a nice, civilized way of putting the little man in his proper place. (I'm clear, John Dewey must have always raised hell with Otto's manuscripts.) Most significant, however, was Dewey's comment on your pamphlet; never was so much said in so few words. At 89, the old man still appreciates a genuine piece of As I wrote Mark, I am very excited about his thesis. I have talked to several people in Washington about it and all are interested in reading it, so it will be some time before I return the manuscript. I need hardly tell you that Mark has caught hold of a subject of the highest import to contemporary social and economic thought, and already he manifests amazing insights and understanding. I do not think it is too much to say that he can do himself and the world a good service by organizing the main efforts of his intellectual life around this subject. Ben Stephankky was in town for a few days last week and, as always, it was a delight to see him. In addition to being very able, he really is a first-class human being. As Hannah points out, there is a real Sholom Alechem quality about him. He stayed with his future in-laws, who seem to be receiving him in a decent style. Ann left for England early this week, but we feel pretty confident that everything will work out. She is due back the beginning of next year and they plan to get married immediately after her return. Lately, I have heard comments from several people on Sam Berger and I am afraid that the right people say the wrong things about him while the wrong people commend him highly. Incidentally, the AF of L Assistant Secretary of Labor, Philip Hannah-- very authentic personality--went to England last month to attend a housing conference. I saw a good deal of him before he left and I told him to inform Berger that a lot of people were getting to feel that he was "selling out" to the British. Hannah said he would do that without mentioning any names. My intentions were, on the whole, honorable. Perhaps a little needling of this kind will provide the kind of shakeup tham Sam needs very badly. Husky and his family are doing very well. You never saw a prouder father; I get daily bulletins on the weight of Rebecca.
