alert, inspiring group they were. Particularly impressive was Hushi who is head of the Haifa Labor Council. They were interested in getting as much technical information as possible about American labor, particularly in the maritime and chemical industries. I gather that Hushi has been instrumental in laying extensive plans for building up the Palestinian maritime fleet and is already preparing to take over from the British the administration of the customs at the various seaports. Weitzman is apparently anxious that insofar as possible the new state use American methods and techniques rather than British or any other. I need hardly tell you that I enjoyed this visit immensely and we have already taken the necessary action to provide these fine people with whatever material they desire. My work here goes on a pace. The now job has brought added responsibilities and headaches but as yet I haven't been thrown off stride except that plans to visit Chicago and Madison have twice been called off at the last moment as a result of emergencies that could not have been foreseen. I am still hoping, however, that I will be able to see you soon--this time I am aiming at the early part of February. By the way, one of the reasons why I have been so overwhelmed with work is the fact that the Office has been badly under-staffed. I am looking particularly for an able, technical economist who is well-vorsed in matters labor so that he can bring his technical skill to bear in such fields as the International Trade Organization as a representative of the Department of Labor's point of view. The job would pay up to $8000. Do you have any suggestions? I am glad that you came out all right in your latest scrap on the Workers' School] It is really shocking that in addition to everything else the Wisconsin Federation of Labor presents such a problem. There is much more I want to write you about but that will have to come another time. The firm of Van Arkel and Kaiser is flourishing. Hannah and the children are in very good shape. She joins me in sending much love to all. Keep well and a Happy Chanukah to you. Very sincerely,
