I returned from Europe the middle of August.
I came home feeling ill and the doctors have since
told me that I have a case of arthritis, which to
say the least, is a damn nuisance. I have found
a specialist in New York who promises that he will
cure me, which has improved my morale, although
the pain in my hands (where I am suffering most),
knees and toes still persists.
I have taken some time off but not as much as
the doctors have prescribed. I suspect that the
pace during the last two years, and particularly
the last six months, has been a little too much,
even for a youngster like myself.
This last trip, by the way, was a very worth-
while one indeed. In London I " "observed" a conference
of the trade union leaders of 16 ERP nations; and
in Paris, I chairmaned a meeting of all of the
European labor attaches, the labor personnel in
Military Government and the ECA labor people. (I
saw a bit of Sam who is still very much the same.)
The exchange of ideas and the survey of particular
situations in particular countries has proved very
profitable. Present at the London meeting were
four AFL leaders and five CIO leaders. After the
London meeting they came to Paris at my invitation
to meet with the labor attaches which was a good
thing for both labor leaders and attaches. I had
an opportunity to spend a good deal of time, with
amongst others, Dave Dubinsky, George Harrison,
Vic Reuther and Dave McDonald, and I was considerably
impressed by all of them. Dubinsky is truly a
