From a letter written by Professor Selig Perlman - December 5, 1946:
"The coal strike demonstrates wide ineptness in high places!
Take the Judge's remark about the alternative of destroying the UMWA or
letting the U. S. go smash. There are too many public men jealous of
Decatur's success with a 'winged phrase'. Or take Krug's suggestion to
the operators that they fine individual miners $11 or 12 a day as the
contract permits. They do not seem to get it through their heads that
a
union is like a nation, especially the miners' union, and even Rotterdam
did not subdue the Dutch."
