Captions, local news, editorials and letters to the editor, reveal
GOVERNMENT
an enormous change of policy of the paper in comparison with those followed
up to a year ago. They certainly reveal a reverse of policy in com-
parisên with those of a year ago, or of followed previous to June, 1940.
The papers now fully support the United States war effort and do their best
induce
to use the Italians to back up such efforts. News items favorable to the
United States receive strong prominence-I would say they receive a slightly
exaggerated prominence in comparison, for example, with the New York Times
or the New York Herald Tribune. I had the opportunity to read a few copies

of these papers 40 ago. At that time the prominence of the news items
favorable to the United States was much more exaggerated than at the present
time and it is possible that that exaggeration of the prominence of such news
was criticized by liberal or anti-Fascist elements because it tended to make
too obviews the unileteral presentation of the news and to make create even in
the news incredible even to the common reader the most inex estreaders Houbts
about the credibility of the news

The point stressed in regard to Italy is that Italy is a victim of the
Nazi tyrants, that Mussolini made a mistake, going to war on the side of Germany,
implying mostly tacitly, but sometimes explicitly (for example, through letters
to the editor) that otherwise Fascism and Il Duce would have been right. I
think that Mr. Pope and his papers would be happy to see Italy separated from
the Axis and to see is at the same time Fascism saved, or to see in Italy a
monarchial, clerical, conservative economic political systemin which many of the
present Fascist institutions and policies would be continued. Activities of
Italian-American socieiíes tending to support the United States war efforts
receive strong prominence. On the contrary, there is practically no reference
