mr
LAMKIN, Uel W.
P,P.F.
President-Emeritus
State Teachers College
Maryville. Missouri
May 19, 1947.
4108
Wrote the President a letter of appreciation for the telegram he sent the people of above
community, in an hour of personal stress and anxiety. "Again may I say that today as men our
hearts go out to you as a man, as well as our loyalfies as citizens support you a,s a Pres-
ident. "
uly 2, 1947 R. L. Saunders, New York City, wrote Mr. Ross inclosing two copies of
telegrams which the President had apparently s ent from Kansas City, and he found in the desk
of the suite in the hotel. Says he would have liked to keep them as a souvenir but, believes
that they should either be in file or destroyed by Mr. Ross. July 7, 1947 Mr. Ross wrote
Mr. Saunders stating that the President, while at Huehlebach, had written two messages, one
to Dr. Uel Lamkin and the other to Miss Truman. Dr. Lamkin's message was inspired by a story
he had read in the Kansas City Star telling how the people of Maryville and other towns had
pitched
in to help the citizens of Worth, which had been hit by a cyclone. Says that the mes-
sage was widely reproduced and printed in facsimile on the front page of the paper. "I think
you deserve this message as a souvenir, and I am enclosing it herewith, with the compliments
of the President. "Cq4bon copy of telegram, prepared on Western Union blänk in long
hand by the President, undated to: Dr. Uel Lampkin, Maryville, Mo. Congratulations on what
Maryville, Grant City and surrounding towns did for Worth yesterday. That is the sort of
Good Neighbor Policy we want all over the World. " Notation: "This may help to complete the
file on Dr. Lamkin re our talk yesterday. The other message was addressed to Margaret Truman
by the President and Hr. Ross has it in his personal files. 11
