October, 5, 1945.
Wrote to President stating that on occasion of Columbus Day in past years, the late
President Roosevelt graviously sent him a message that was transmitted, through medium of
his newspaper, to Americans of Italian origin through this hemisphere - requests such mes-
sage from President this years ---10/11/45 President sent following day letter: "It gives
me pleasure to send a message of hope and courage to our citizens of Italian blood who are
justly proud of their affinity with the intrepid navigator whose day we celebrate. The
same spirit of steadfast faith which sustained Columbus on his quest into the unknown will
bring the Italian homeland safely through its present vicissitudes to enduring peace, happi-
ness and security. That is the hope in which we all join as we celebrate discovery day."
