President Harry S. Truman
White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear President Truman:
It is with the utmost dismay that we must make
clear to you our complete opposition to your recent
request to Congress for drastic legislation to curb
the rights of labor.
As you have said many times, "none of us wishes
to take any action which will injure labor". We re-
member that you were elected on a pro-labor, liberal
platform, and we remember that we commended your speech
of Jan. 21, 1946, outlining a forward-looking program
in the best interests of economic stability and pros-
perity. We hoped at that time, Mr. President, that you
would take an active part in seeing that this program
was implemented by Congress.
Now we find you requesting legislation that can be
supported only by the enemies of labor, and we are shocked
that the President of the United States should ask in time
of peace for powers far beyond those demanded in time of
war. We are sure that the voters of this country did not
expect that you would deliberately take thesside of
management in the postwar readjustment period.
For the good of the nation we are calling on you to
remain faithful to the progressive ideals of the Roosevelt
Administration, to veto all legislation which would injure
the status of organized labor, and to exert every effort
to defeat the current attempts to destroy this vital force
in the American way of life.
Yours very sincerely,
Selma Sehna V. Hachenburg, V. Hachenburg Secretary
(Mrs. Robert Hachenburg)
