7-7 PCA Progressive Citizens of America New York Chapter - Greenwich Village P.O. Box 281, Station D - New York 3, N.Y. Chairman July 4, 1947 DR. RANDOLPH B. SMITH P.P.F. Executive Secretary MRS. ISABEL VAN FRANK 5 St. Lukes Place 200 WA. - 5-5049 Treasurer ALICE GLICK Hon. Harry Truman White House Pro Washington, D.C. D Dear Mr. President: I speak for 600 citizens of Greenwich Village who were pleased with your speech before the NAACP--studded as it was with high-sounding sentiments about freedom and liberty. We regret only that it was rendered sour and empty a day or so later by the news that your Secretary of State had ap- proved the discharge of 10 of his workers on "suspicion"-- sufficient grounds for "suspicion" being the manner in which they choose their friends. I shan't be so forthright as to call this a Nazi pro- cedure; I shall merely point out that this sort of abuse of personal liberty and freedom was so extensively used by the Nazis as to be characteristic if not an inherent property of Nazi methodology. We urge you most strongly to call off the big Washington witch-hunt before the last efficient civil servant has been scared out of the government service. Sincerely yours, R.C.W.Daris R.C.W.
