CALIFORNIA SOUTHERN BAPTIST
both by precept and example to advance the Divine precepts
of right and righteousness. We read in the Book, "righteous-
ness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people."
Every good man knows the hurt of strong drink and the folly
of gambling. Such conduct is neither morally, physically
or economically sound and safe.
Southern Baptists of California and throughout the
country would assure you of their continued prayers and
cooperation, but in case these magazines and newspapers
are correct in stating that you drink bourbon or anyoother
kind of intoxicant and play a little friendly poker, they
would urge you to repent and forsake such folly. Southern
Baptists feel that such conduct is not only a shameful
disgrace to the good name of Southern Baptists, but it is
an embarrasement to Christian people everywhere.
Southern Baptists would further urge that if these statements
so often made by current newspapers and magazines are untrue,
that you officially denounce them as untrue and demand
their retraction.
