TELEPHONE MURRAY HILL 2-4260 E. KENDALL GILLETT 60 EAST 42ND STREET NEW YORK 17, NEW YORK October 26, 1945 Honorable Harry S. Truman The White House Washington, D. C. My dear President Truman: I have just been reviewing our correspondence of September 1944 concerning military training which started with my comment on your article which appeared in the August 22nd issue of Colliers magazine. I want to take this opportunity of telling you that, to my mind your speech covering one year of military training for boys between 18 and 22 was excellent, and that a law enforcing it should be enacted regardless of political expediency. In your speech I think you missed one of the most potent arguments One year training would promote democracy among our citizens faster than any other way which could be evolved. The rubbing of shoulders by our men from the four corners of our country would bring about an understanding of the problems confronting us faster and more efficiently than any other conceivable method. If you think well of this idea, I hope you will incorporate it in one of your coming addresses, as I believe it should be emphasized and made a cardinal feature in the promotion of the idea of universal training. If an opportunity presents itself, may I have your reaction. Very sincerely, E.Vunoull theat E. Kendall Gillett
