I believe we will accomplish more to try to analyze the cause of the
war and work to eliminate that, than to assume it is just cussedness and
nothing can combat it but the mailed fist.
I have read press comments of your speech and the measure and I am
amazed at the puerile reasons offered, the prejudices and grudges displayed
the unbelievalbe presumption and unwarranted assumption they reveal.
One says it would get the right man in the right place in case of
another war; another assumes it would be an insecure peace and pious hop-
ing without it but peace with honor ?) with it.
If there is to be more rè-armament do we assume we are the only
ones competent to have it?
I strenously object to any plan which takes a boy away from home to
subject him to militaristic life. Both from the actual harm to him and
from the psychological repercussions of such hypothesis-- that we can
never trust any nation.
What knowledge have you of the innumerable tragedies which have
been foretold? And of this Experiment in Mesmerism?
Do you admit the existence of a Power that can take your own will
away from you and make you do anything?
Do you know who controls me?
And how do you explain the prophetic vision which so many of us
have exhibited?
I would appreciate an answer.
Yours truly
Mary Ashworth
