Dear Mr. President,
It is with a sense of deep disappointment that many of us re-
ceived your latest words on Peacetime Conscription - for, whatever
name it has, your program amounts to that.
I can see all these proposals for universal peacetime military
training as instruments in the hands of military nationalists and
power politicians. They threaten our American traditions; they are
not in harmony, and do not agree, with the spirit or the letter of
the United Nations Charter.
Conscription, universal military training, call it what you may,
is not Christian, nor American, nor sensible. I should, therefore,
like to render my protest to what is proposed by your administration.
