My Dear President Truman: To some of us who have hoped that the United Nations Charter and our participation in it might mean a definite and positive face toward world peace, your recent address advocating peacetime military conscription and training came as a distinct shock. I am writing because I am sure you will want to know that there are many of us who are opposed to any form of peacetime military conscription, both on religious grounds and because we feel that it is not only in direct opposition to the spirit and pur- pose of the Charter of the United Nations, but also that it is adopting a method which was the center of the Fascist setup against which we have just completed war.
