DEPARTMENT OF STATE the WASHINGTON FEBRUARY 4 1953 My dear Mr. Truman: I am enclosing a letter from Colonel R. M. G. Lloyd, Ball Director, Coronation Ball Office, 16, Grosvenor Place, London, S.W.I, which Mrs. Short referred to me on January 5 for recommendation. Colonel Lloyd's request for a message to be used in the Ball program was taken up with our Embassy at London, which has now informed me as follows: "The Coronation Ball to be held at Royal Albert Hall on May 27 is not an official function. It is a charity affair in honor of Alamein Village for crippled soldiers and is under the chairmanship of the Duke of Norfolk who is Earl Marshal of the Coronation. Bucking- ham Palace has informed us, however, that since it is not an official function, the Palace sees no occasion for President Truman to send a message unless he has some special interest in the charity. 11 Sincerely yours, TRUMAN NARA John F. Simmons Enclosure: Chief of Protocol Letter. The Honorable Harry S. Truman, Federal Reserve Building, Kansas City, Missouri.
