EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OFFICE OF DEFENSE MOBILIZATION WASHINGTON 25, D. C. OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR December 21, 1951 A S. AND The President The White House Washington, D. C. My dear Mr. Presidents If the threatened stoppage in the steel industry should take place, it would have an immediate and very serious impact on our entire defense production program as well as on our total civilian economy. In order to prevent serious damage to the steel furnaces, the cooling of the furnaces would have to begin a week to eleven days prior to the strike and it would require a like period to get the furnaces going after the strike is settled. The Steel Division of the National Production Authority estimates that a strike would involve a loss of approximately 324,000 tons per work day. This is a loss which we just cannot afford to take. It is my hope that the Government will be able to take steps which will prevent this serious disruption to our total mobilization program. Sincepely Charles É. Wilson
