MacARTHUR
. s ARCHIVES RECORDS SERVICE" AMO of
the
In the file that follows are copies of vari ous papers having to
do with President Truman's relations with General Douglas A. MacArthur as
Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in the Far East.
While these begin with the White House news releases concerning
a statement addressed to MacArthur on September 24, 1945 outlining his
authority as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, a considerable por-
tion of the file relates to the President's dismissal of MacArthur on
April 10, 1951.
Included are copies of various messages exchanged between the
President and General MacArthur and copies of other documents bearing upon
the President's action. There are also included notes giving the President's
recollection of events leading up to the recall of MacArthur.
Other material is in the President's personal files including,
presumably, notes by George M. Elsey, Administrative Assistant at the time.
Releases relating to Korea and the outbreak of hostilities in
that country and material concerning President Truman's meeting with General
MacArthur At Wake Island are contained in these records.
Other records are in the files of the Department of Defense and
the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
