NIACT, 2582, June 11, midnight
Throughout four hours of negotiation with French
delegation at (ref our No. 2578 of June 11, 9 p.m.)
AFHQ this afternoon there was most cordial atmosphere
and Carpentier made excellent impression. Doyen's Chief
of Staff made certain difficulties over "moral obligation"
of French to see to it that no harm befell those persons
in French occupied territory who had declared themselves
in favor of annexation to France. He insisted for some-
time on inserting a clause in the agreement providing
for guarantee of no reprisals against these elements and
also wanted included a sentence promising that AMG would
see to it that there would be no anti-French acts in the
zone to be evacuated by the French. He also objected to
use of Carabinieri in area from which French were with-
drawing. Formulas were devised to overcome these objec-
tions insofar as possible and Carpentier overruled Doyen's
Chief of Staff
