Parliamentary leader Labor Party stated following
to Embassy officer:
1. While there is dissension within Catholic Party
he expects Romme to keep control since "progressive
Catholic group" lacks both leadership and coherence.
2. Finance Minister Lieftinck on behalf Labor Party
to press point today in Cabinet meeting of necessity
government conciliating world opinion and UN because
of serious effect economic sanctions would have on
Netherlands economy and financial position. Will also
attempt to bring pressure on Catholic Party by stress -
ing same points in private conversation with Van der
Brink, Catholic Minister Economic Affairs who is con-
sidered by labor to be one of few Catholic leaders with
comprehension of international political and economic
inplications Indonesian issue.
3. Labor party now convinced restoration Republicans
in Jogja is necessary. Favor creation "Vatican City"
by token restoration of Republic Government in few
square miles comprising government buildings etc. Do
not think more than this can be done.
