URGENT
Have seen Lovink and have impressed on him fact that
nothing contained either Harriman's approach to Stikker
or Bonsal's conversation with Van Boetzelaer was to be
interpreted in any way as pressurizing his government
on Indopesian question. I stated that the facts sub-
mitted by both Harriman and Bonsal were intended only
to point out that certain obligations resting on our
government because of its UN membership might make it
impossible furnish military equipment assistance under
MAP in advance Indonesian settlement in accordance SC
position. I believe this statement somewhat lightened
Lovink's evident depression this point and he conveyed
same immediately to Stikker who was in Cabinet conference.
Bonsal here conferring with me.
