"NATIONAL SERVICE*
Herriot has just been in to SEE me, (my te le gram 2902
May 23) HE is physically well and in fine shape mentally.
After recounting at SOME length his prison Experiences
in GErmany he told me that when he arrived here he Expected
to move at once into his old quarters in the Palais Bourbon
but was told that for this reason and that he could not
move into them. A sumptuous apartment had been reserved
for him at the Ritz which he did not occupy.
HE spoke a.t length about his firm belief in cooperation
all along the line with US and the British and the
necessity for France to have a security egreement with
Russia HE was critical of DE Gaulle's policy of sending
troops to the Levant and his policy in Northwest Italy;
he said that this was not the moment for prestige politics;
France had more urgent material needs. HE said that he
told General DE Gaulle yesterday that he does not approve
of his plans for calling a constitutional assembly.
