First is to stand with Gen. De Gaulle in
whatever position he may take on Syrian affair, in
which case he will appear to be giving full ondorso-
ment to De Gaulle's policy in Syria, a policy to
which he has in fact been opposed. Bidault apparently
fears that is this evont, ovon if for roasons of
natl pride most Fronchmen support De Gaullo, he may
bo severcly criticized by certain clements for spon-
soring a policy which has damaged prostigo of French
Govt both at home and abroad.
Second alternativo is to tender his rosignation
and disclaim responsibility for what has happonod
in Syria. locording to our informant, howover,
Bidault docs not wish to GO this far sinco ho says
this might entail rosignation of othor LIRP (rpt MRP)
members of cabinet somo of whom might be roplacod
by porsons belonging to another pol party. He is
also unwilling to resign as he foars such action on
his part might possibly precipitato a serious
govornmental crisis from which oxtrome loft would do-
rivo only profit.
In conclusion our informant stated that whilo
Bidault has not apparontly mado any final decision
he recd impression last ovening that unhappy as
Bidault may bo about Syrian affair he will continue
in De Gaullo govt.
