Dept. of State letter, Aug. 10, 1972 By NLTHL NARS Date 7.25.75 4955, August 16, 4 p.m. Bidault Chauvel and other French officials continue to stress fact that DE Gaulle hopes that his visit to US will serve to clear up all old misunderstandings so that US and France can work togEther in closest harmony. While DE Gaulle is preparing himself to discuss questions outlined in my 4951, August 16, I am told that he does not wish to appEar aggressive or unreasonable and that therEfore he has not as yet decided exactly how far he should go in presenting French views. From what these French officials tell me he attaches a very great importance to SUCCESS of his visit in creating friendly and favorably atmosphere. Of course at heart he hopes to get something tangible out of visit. CAFFERY WFS SE CRET
