PERSONAL FOR THE PRESIDENT
I have separately wired not only the resignation
to which you are ontitled but my assurance of complete
support whatever you decide. I mean just this, be-
cause it is perfectly clear that the extent of the
terrific problems both domestic and international
which you will have to meet is not fully realized.
I
am convinced that your administration will be a great
success and it must be so for the safety and best in-
terests of United States and of the world. For this
reason I am also taking the liberty of telegraphing
my various friends in New York asking them to support
you in all possible ways. This group had held the
balance of power in New York and may be of use,
Amid my own grief at the loss of President Roosevelt,
who was not only my Captain but also my friend, let me
send you
