FOR THE PRESIDENT ACTING SECRETARY AND WAR DEPT
On occasion of my recent trip. Colonel Marlowe
Merrick, who was Commander of the airfield at Xandery
Dutch Guiana, and now is Commander at Atkinson Field
British Guiana, told me that Governor Brons of Dutch
Guiana had expressed the hope that US would negotiate
long-term lease of American airfield at Xandery. W.e
have this under arrangement during present war but
arrangement expires thereafter.
Returning to Rio, I explored subject informally
with Molekamp, Netherlands Minister here and formerly
in Emb at Washington, asking what he thought would be
attitude of Neth Govt if US were to propose negotiating
such a lease. Molekamp unhesitatingly repliod that he
