FOR PRESIDENT AND SECRETARY ONLY
At an audience with His Holiness the Pope this
morning I presented Mrs. Roosevelt's message of apprecia-
tion of the Pope's sympathy transmitted by you.
I also presented substance of DEPTEL 56, May 12
re situation of Father Braun in Moscow at which
Pope expressed regret that suggestion made would not be
acceptable to Russia.
I advised His Holiness of my projected visit to
US in June.
Beyond general observations re cessation of
hostilities in Europe, concern over readjustment of
matters political social and religious in European
area and a general expression of fear of growth of
Communism in Europe and reaction at Trieste and in
Yugoslavia and Poland audience was without special
significance.
