135, Sixth
FOR THE PRESIDENT AND THE SECRETARY FOR YOUR
INFORILATION.
On May 31 I entertained at dinner the members
of Diplomatic Corps to Holy See as well as ranking
officials of Vatican administration and resident and
visiting American Catholic clergy. It was a
significant occasion vithout formal speeches but
the respon'se to toasts to President Truman and
the late President Roosevelt evoked the warmest
demonstration of esteem and friendship. Monsignors
Tardini and Montini the acting heads of Secretarait
of State represented His Holiness the Secretariat of
State being still vacant and responded appropriately
to the toast to His Holiness which I had the honor to
offer. The dinner was marked by great dignity and
cordiality and occasioned evident satisfaction to all
concerned.
