Building for Offices of the President
A contract for the erection of additional accommodations to
the building for offices of the President, for which Congress appro-
priated $40,000 in Sundry Civil Act approved March 4, 1909, and
$13,500 in the urgent deficiency act approved August 5, 1909, was
entered into on August 6, 1909. The contractors broke ground for
the addition on August 9, 1909, and from that date to its completion
on October 31, nine days in advance of the contract time, work pro-
gressed at a very rapid rate. New furniture, rugs, etc., were pur-
chased and installed in the building which was re-occupied by the
TROWIN
clerical force on October 31, 1909.

The altered building affords nearly twice as much space as
C.S. BOYER
before and is much more conveniently arranged in every way. The
President's room is oval in shape and is provided with special
ventilating and air cooling arrangements. The Cabinet room is on
one side of it and the Secretary's room on the other, while the
waiting rooms are separated from it by a wide corridor. The whole
interior presents a roomy and dignified appearance. The height of
the building has not been increased at all andfrom the outside it
is as inconspicuous as before.

The Second Deficiency Act, Fiscal Year 1926, contained an
appropriation of $375,000 for reconstructing the roof, attic, and
ceilings of the second story of the Executive Mansion, including
