The President -2- November 26, 1947 The Commission still feel that a porch would seriously mar not only the south portico but as well the entire south facade. A window would have to be cut down to provide a door to the porch, which in it- self would materially change the design of this, the most notable of American historic monuments. If these proposed alterations are made they will be the first substantial ones in the exterior of the central element of the White House in 118 years or since the addition of the north portico in 1829 which, we have every reason to believe, was a part of James Hoban's original design. In the circumstances the Commission are con- fident that the stand they have taken in this matter is thoroughly sound and consequently they hope that, in the interest of preserving the integrity of the original design of the White House, the President will abandon the project. Most sincerely and respectfully, For THE COMMISSION OF FINE ARTS TRENAN ARCHIVESS Principal Drande 65 Gilmore D. Clarke Chairman
