MEMORANDUM
To:
Mr. Harold G. Crim
White House
Washington, D. C.
Subj:
Structural Steel Framing for White House Balcony -
Inspection of.
1. Pursuant to your request of January 29, 1948, an inspection of
the structural steel framework for the balcony being constructed
above the south entrance to the White House was made by Commander
Frank C. Tyrrell and Mr. S. M. Bagdoyan, Structural Engineer, P-4,
Bureau of Yards and Docks, on 30 January 1948.
2. A visual inspection indicated that both shop and field welding
used in the fabrication of the T sections and the connections between
members was of excellent quality and of adequate strength to support
the loads. The recess in the circular columns and the building wall
have been neatly cut and are of sufficient depth to insure satisfactory
bearing for the T's that rest on bearing plates. The structural plans
of the balcony were reviewed and the design roughly checked. The
structural steel members have been correctly sized to support the dead
load of the structure and a uniform live load of 100 lbs. per square
foot which is considered satisfactory for the balcony.
