for 2-21 PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART FAIRMOUNT, PHILADELPHIA OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR THE 1948 FeB 27 4 22 PM 'd8 The President of the United States Washington, D. C. RECEIVED Dear Mr. President: May I take the liberty of writing you that I am one of those who view the new balcony at the White House with approval. As you doubtless know, the south portico of the White House was an addition proposed by Jefferson. It happens that I have written a volume dealing with Jefferson as an architect. It was Jefferson who, in America, popularized the type of the tall portico. In designing the University of Virginia he faced exactly the problem you now face at the White House, namely, to gain privacy for the family, sitting out of doors, when the main floor of the porticos was overrun by the public. He solved this at the University by adopting a hanging balcony under the portico. I am sure he would have approved your balcony at the White House, so admirably carried out by Mr. Delano. Yours sincerely, Take Kimilabl MG BECCORDS FISKE KIMBALL SERVICE Cs
