3 JOHN McSHAIN I7TH & SPRING GARDEN STREETS PHILADELPHIA THE WHITE HOUSE February 15, 1952 FEB 16 II 26 AM '52 RECEIVED My dear Mr. President: Thank you for your note of January 30th. In keeping with my previous promise, I would like to review for you the progress as of this time, indicating the pos- sibility of the work at the White House being completed within the period of time which you have specified. As of last evening, it was apparent that the picture is far brighter, and if you have an opportunity, over the week-end, to visit the building I am sure you will be very much encouraged. As you know, the Third Floor is completed in its en- tirety and the decorators are now installing furniture and drape- ries. All the work on the Second Floor, with the exception of some miscellaneous glass work in the bathrooms, will be finish- ed as of tonight. The painter is hopeful of finishing the great- er part of his work by Friday, February 22nd, thereby turning this part of the building over to the interior decorators. The First Floor is well underway, and I am reasonably confident that sufficient time remains to permit us to complete all our work within the scheduled period. The Ground Floor and Basement, while in appearance are not too attractive, yet we feel confident at this time that well in advance of the date which you have set these two floors will have been completed. We are hopeful of hav- ing the kitchens completed in their entirety by the 15th of March, so that the various mechanisms can be carefully tested and ready for use by the time you and Mrs. Truman return to the White House. Within the next ten days, I am hopeful of giving you a final report on the progress of the work, and it is my firm be- lief, at this time, that this report will contain an assurance that the building will be completed within the time tyou specified and ARCHIVES NATIONAL a Sincerely yours, The Honorable Harry S. Truman The White House Washington 25, D. C.
