PRESIDENT: This came out of the White House. All the paneling on this floor
is wood out of the old Whi.te House. It was saved. All. these ground floor
rooms are paneled from the pine that came out of the old house.
MR. CRONKITE: I like the touch of leaving the original nail holes in it, too.
PRESIDENT: Yes, it adds that much. That picture of Mrs. Coolidge. I was
coming here to a reception one time and this picture formerly was out in the
corridor there and I came in with Senator Morris Sheppard of Texas. We stopped
in front of Mrs. Coolidge's picture and Senator Sheppard said, "Harry, that dog
got my breakfast one time when I was down here." I said, "Well, how's that?"
"Well, " he said, "President Coolidge used to have breakfast for Senators and
Congressmen and we were sitting around the table and the dog came up and barked
and Mr. Collidge said, 'Senator, he wants your sausage. I gave him my sausage
and I didn't get another one."
MR. CRONKITE: Mr. President, what about this piece of furniture out in the
middle? It looks like it came from the Baltimore Hotel in Kansas City when
they tore the old building down.
PRESIDENT: It came in 1860 and was formerly in the Blue Room, if I remember
correctly.
MR. CRONKITE: That was in President Lincoln's Administration.
PRESIDENT: That's right.
MR. CRONKITE: And this being in the China Room, could we take a look at some
of the china down here?
PRESIDENT: The china here is the confused china -- very confused. There are
samples here from nearly every Presidential purchase. This is Lincoln China here.
MR. CRONKITE: I see that Mr. Lincoln had the eagle facing the right way on his
china.
PRESIDENT: That's the way it ought to be on the Great Seal of the United States.
MR. CRONKITE: It's beautiful, indeed.
PRESIDENT: Dolliy Madison's china here. This is before the house was burned
and this is after the house was burned.
MR. CRONKITE: By the British in 1812.
PRESIDENT: Yes, that's right.
MR. CRONKITE: Blue before and green afterwards -- very nice with the lower
wreath around it
PRESTDENT: There is some lovely china over here on this side. This is Theodore
Roosevelt's here.
MR. CRONKITE: Gold with the seal small at the edge, and the eagle facing the
wrong way. No. No, no, he's facing the right way.
PRESIDENT: That's the same as he faces on the Great Seal of the United States.
The eagle Caces the right way on the Great Seal of the United States.
MR. CRONKITE: Of course, II never knew that until you pointed it out a moment
ago -- now I'll be `watching heads of eagles most of the time and not necessarily
those on coins either.
