FIFTH DRAFT
I hope the American people recognize how vital this conference
actually is. Out of it can come the means of achieving industrial harmony
and a new approach to human relationships in industry. The extent to which
this will be accomplished at this conference depends a great deal upon the
interest of the American people in the conference.
Until that machinery can be worked out, I urge upon labor and
upon management the necessity of getting together on their problems.
Tolerance and good will are most essential in the settlement of disputes
over wages.
Public opinion will not countenance refusal on the part of
oither management or labor to proceed in a, peaceful, free and democratic
manner to arrive at just conclusions.
This is a time for proving the lessons we have learned during
the war, the lessons of fair play, of give-and-take on a democratic
basis, of working together in unity for the future. We all have a common
aim, which is prosperity and a just share of the good things of life and
of security. We can do this if we sit down together at the conference
table and iron out our troubles together. There is no room in our economy
for unfair dealing and for greedy individuals or groups who want their
own way at no matter what cost to others. The people will not stand for
it. Their Government will not stand for it.
