We cannot stop there.
We must keep moving forvard, with new concepts of civil
rights to safeguard our beritage. The extension of civil rights today
means, not protection of the people against the Government, but protection
of the people by the Government.
We must make the Federal Government a friendly, vigilant
mean
America defender of Emerican the rights and equalities of all Americans. afail
As Americans, ve believe that every man should be free to
live his life es he vishes. He should be limited only by hie responsi-
bility to bis fellow countrymen. If this freedom is to be more than
a dream, each man must have equality of opportunity. The only limit
to an American's achievement should be hie ability, hie industry and
his character. The rewards for bis effort ahould be determined only by
these truly qualities.
Our immediate task is to remove the last remmante of the
barriers which stand between millione of our citizens and their birthright.
Thore is no justifiable reason for discrinination because of ancestry,
or religion, or race, or color.
Ve must not tolerate such limitations on the freedom of any
of our people and on their enjoyment of the basic rights vhich every
citizen in a truly democratic society must possess.
