PERSONAL AND SEGRET
My dear General Vaughan:
In the first place, I want to tell you how
much the talk with the President has helped our
diplomatic representatives in the Near East who
are at present in Washington for consultation. They
are returning to their posts as a result of their
conversation with the President with higher morale
and will, I am sure, be more effective spokesmen
for the American Government in the Near East. I
wish to thank you particularly for the assistance
which you rendered in this matter.
In accordance with the suggestion made by you,
I am sending herewith for the records a copy of the
informal statement which Mr. Wadsworth, our Minister
to Syria and Lebanon, made to the President on be-
half of his three colleagues from the Near East.
