MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Sub ject :
United States Representation at the
South African Celebration of the
300th Anniversary of the Landing of
van Reibeck at the Cape
In your memorandum of March 31, you forwarded
a suggestion from Mrs. India Edwards, Vice Chairman
and Director, Women's Division of the Democratic
National Committee, that Mrs. John G. Erhardt,
widow of our late Ambassador to South Africa, be
designated as your representative to attend the
South African van Reibeck Tercentenary Celebration.
The Department has not as yet received an
official invitation from the South African go vern-
ment to be represented at this celebration. As a
result of an informal conversation with Mrs. Erhardt,
however, the Department has learned that she would
be unable to undertake such an assignment.
If and when an invitation is réceived from the
South African government for United States repre-
sentation at this celebration, the Department will
make an appropriate recommendation concerning our
representation
to accept it!
