THE ATTORNEY GENERAL
WASHINGTON

RECEIVED
Dear Mr. President:
I have your memorandum of August 16th, regard- -
ing a law enforcement program for Alaska.
We in the Department of Justice realize full well
how serious that problem is in the Territory of Alaska,
and we have been doing our utmost to try to meet it. Only
last week I had a representative of the Department whom
I had sent up there return to Washington, and he gave me
a report which justifies your concern. I will be discussing
this matter with the Secretary of Agriculture, and the
Secretary of the Interior when he returns to Washington
after Labor Day.
I believe that you would be justified in making very
strong representations to the Congress to have them provide
funds by which a reasonable job could be accomplished.
I will tell you more about this situation when I have
an opportunity to talk with you.
Sincerely,
Howard
